Diary of an adventure to Eastern Europe.. Part 13 Church of the Rock and Helsinki Cathedral..... Helsinki, Finland

Our next stop.... The Church of the Rock...

Another famous landmark in Helsinki is The Church of the Rock. This very untraditional Lutheran church was constructed between 1968 and 1969. It has one circular dome design, made out of solid rock reaching down far below ground level. It looks like a spaceship. The concave glass and copper roof appears to be emerging from the ground. The landscape outside the church is very stark and lunar in appearance. Our tour guide told us that 2 young architects Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen won a competition for its design and I feel pretty sure that you will never see anything like it anywhere else in the world.

The dome of the church....

Inside the church, the acoustics are said to be superb which obviously why it is a marvelous place for concerts, even though it is still a functioning place of worship. If you can see here in the photo there is no altar, the pews are made of birchwood and of course the walls are jagged rock. The glass panels are perfectly placed in the copper roof to allow extremely good natural lighting on sunny, clear days.

Then after allowing enough time for all of us to take photos inside the church we were headed to our next stop.. the Helsinki Cathedral...

The Helsinki Cathedral lies in the very heart of the city and comprises a huge central dome, which towers high above the structure and comprises a huge central dome and is complemented by four other smaller surrounding domes. Construction lasted for more than 20 years and it opened its doors in 1852. It is also called the St. Nicholas Church.

The Helsinki Square...

We all had to go to bed early since we had to catch an early morning train to St. Petersburg. Wake up call will be at 5:00 am ... Goodnight everyone!
